Retinol

Retinol is a popular ingredient, especially in anti-aging products. What does retinol do? There are many retinol benefits. It blocks enzymes that break down the skin’s matrix, stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen fibers, promotes cell turnover, and helps reduce breakouts, pigmentation, fine lines.

How to use it

You should introduce retinoids gradually. Start with low concentrations and only in the fall or winter months. Apply the first few weeks just 1-2 times per week, then increase frequency as your skin gets used to it. Always apply in the evening, on clean, dry skin. Always use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ during the day.

Retinoids aren't recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding people due to the high risk of irritation and side effects.

Suitable for

It has a high irritation potential, so it's better suited for oily and combination skin. However, encapsulated forms have a lower potential for irritation and are suitable for all skin types.

Things to know

Pairs nicely with all hydrating ingredients and works especially well with peptides for anti-aging benefits.

FAQ

1. What should I pair with retinol at night?

At night, retinol is best combined with two types of products: hydrating ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, etc.) and repairing ingredients (such as ceramides, cholesterol, etc.). Use a gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, and, if needed, a repairing moisturizer.

2. Can I put moisturizer on before retinol?

Not only can you, but sometimes you should. This is called the “sandwich method”. For this, apply a moisturizer BEFORE retinol, as long as the cream doesn't contain strong occlusive ingredients (such as mineral oil or high concentrations of petrolatum) that can block retinol penetration. Ideal products to layer under retinol are light emulsions with ceramides and hyaluronic acid. This helps reduce irritation, peeling, and redness. This method is especially suitable for dry, normal, and sensitive skin, or when you are just starting with retinol.

3. Why wait 30 minutes to apply retinol?

30 minutes is only an approximate guideline. Sometimes 10-15 minutes after cleansing is enough. This is necessary to reduce the risk of side effects such as irritation, peeling, and even retinoid dermatitis, as damp skin can increase the likelihood of side effects.
