Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is an AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) naturally present in the skin as part of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF), helping to keep skin healthy and elastic. What does lactic acid do? It hydrates, exfoliates (at concentrations above 8%), supports the skin’s protective functions (as part of NMF), and can even out skin tone and reduce pigmentation.

How to use it

You can use lactic acid for skin every evening in a leave-on product. Remember to always apply sunscreen in the morning.

Suitable for

All skin types, including sensitive skin (except for skin with rosacea).

Things to know

Avoid using lactic acid products above 8% at the same time as retinol, other acids, or irritating ingredients, unless under a doctor’s supervision.

FAQ

1. Is lactic acid safe during pregnancy?

Yes, lactic acid is considered safe during pregnancy. It belongs to the AHA acid group and is one of the mildest exfoliants. During pregnancy, it's allowed in concentrations up to 5-10% for home use and with short contact time. However, you should to do a patch test first due to increased skin sensitivity during pregnancy.

2. What does lactic acid do for skin that is crepey?

At higher concentrations, lactic acid exfoliates the skin, helping remove dead skin cells and speed up cell turnover. It's also a natural moisturizing factor (NMF). It attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Well-hydrated skin looks firmer, and wrinkles become less visible.

3. Is lactic acid the same as hyaluronic acid?

No, lactic acid and hyaluronic acid are completely different substances. What is lactic acid exactly? It's an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Its main role is exfoliation (chemical peeling) and stimulation of cell renewal. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan. Its main role is strong hydration, not exfoliation. Plus, lactic acid has hydrating properties.
